Don’t Miss This…Summer Camps & Enrichment Opportunities

Spring has arrived! The weather is getting warmer, the countdown to the last day of school has begun, and as a parent – you may be looking for the perfect summer camp for your child. The American Camp Association (ACA) states that summer camps build social skills, character, and self-respect – as well as expand an individual’s community living skills.

Despite the many benefits of summer camps – some parents with a child who experience a developmental or other disability may worry that the camp they are sending their child to won’t be inclusive, and those who run the camp won’t accurately understand the needs and skills of their child. While these worries are certainly valid – taking time during the spring to research camps near you, and speaking to those who run camps can alleviate some of the worries you and your child may have.

Check out the following resources to find summer camps and enrichment opportunities near you!

The Upper Room (36 Tsienneto Rd, Derry, NH) is an organization dedicated to strengthening individuals and families with resources and education. They are offering the following FREE activities this summer.

  • Garden play group: Mondays from July 11th-August 15th
  • Ice cream social: Wednesday, August 10th from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
  • CONNECT Storytime, Crafts, and Snacks at the Derry Public Library on the third Friday of the month from 11:00 am to noon for parents/caregivers and their children up to age 6.

They also have summer field trips offered on select Wednesday mornings. Call The Upper Room to learn more about these field trips – and the support groups they have.

There are so many options out there and we hope you find the right fit for you/your loved one! NH Magazine states, “the best way to ensure that a camp program is set up to provide your child with a great experience is to be honest about your child’s needs. Ask questions about the system and support the camp can offer: not every camp will have what you are looking for: although many will be able to work creatively with you to find flexible solutions or recommend a better fit.”
